Contribute Personal Web Site Setup
Changes to personal web sites occured February 18, 2008!
Recent changes to personal web services for campus users may require the use of a 3rd-party sFTP (secure file transfer protocol) application, such as Cyberduck for Macintosh OS X, in order to connect and transfer files from a local computer to the web server. Recent versions of Dreamweaver (2004, Studio 8 and CS3) and Contribute (3 and 4 aka CS3) support sFTP natively and do not require a 3rd-party sFTP application to move files between the local computer and web server.
- If you do not already have Contribute CS 3, you can obtain it from the Macintosh software installer server in the Adobe software directory. Contribute CS 3 is available on standard lab builds.
- Open Adobe Contribute CS 3, which should be installed in your Applications directory on the hard drive

- The default Contribute window will appear if this is your first time using this program. Click Create Connection to enter host, username and password information for the web server.

- If you have a Contribute connection key, you can use it to automatically configure your settings, otherwise click Continue to manually configure your connection settings.

- Set your connection type to Website and enter your web address to http://www.appstate.edu/~username where username is your University username (the same used for email, AppalNET and Novell).

- Select Secure FTP (SFTP) from thefirst dropdown menu, enter www.appstate.edu as the name of the SFTP server, and your Universty username and password in the following fields.

- Set the path to your web space on the server to /home/u/username/public_html/ where u is the first letter of your username and username is your University username (the same used for email, AppalNET and Novell)

- To finalize the setup process, enter your full name and email address - this is used to identify pages which are "checked out" by other users in a shared environment or by a single user maintaining a site with multiple computers. If you are a single user maintaining the web site from multiple computers, you may wish to enter your full name as "Full Name - Work" and "Full Name - Home" or "Full Name - iMac" and "Full Name - Dell" to identify where or what computer you have checked out pages and draft copies.

- The summary of your settings is displayed - if you have reached this point, you have successfully set up your web site. Click Finish and duly accept Contribute's congratulations.

- To edit your page, navigate your site using Contribute's built-in web browser to a page you want to edit, then click Edit Page from the toolbar.

- To publish the page, click Publish on the toolbar. If you are not ready to publish your changes, click Save for Later... The changed page will be saved locally in the Drafts console on the left pane in Contribute where you can open it at a later time to complete your changes and publish to the web server. To discard your changes and restore the web page to its orignal state, click Discard Draft on the toolbar.
